Tam-O-Shanter - A Model of Energy Efficiency

The skating/exhibition hall/sports complex known as Tam-O-Shanter has been responsible for all expenditures since its opening. With utility costs as a major cost, especially in an ice arena, the staff have undertaken a number of initiatives.

The first uses heat from the compressors to pre-heat water, reducing the need for natural gas. Computers manage the operation of the compressors and regulate the times that dehumidifiers and cooling tower fans run, all of which cuts down on use of electricity and natural gas. Currently the staff is evaluating the use of solar panels to provide the considerable amount of hot water Tam-O needs. It is also researching a way to purify and re-use snow as wash water from the ice resurfacing and using the computer to control building temperatures throughout.

Solar heating is the most effective use of the sun's energy, with short paybacks. As a team dedicated to provide the best service at a reasonable cost to its customers, the Tam-O staff is dedicated to achieving and maintaining the most efficient and stable sources of energy available.

Individuals and businesses can learn how their buildings can achieve greater energy security by looking at the Web site http://www.energystar.gov/ on the Internet. It is probably the most comprehensive source of information available. Information on grant programs available from the state of Ohio are found at www.odod.state.oh.us/cdd/oee/gtantsloans.htm
